Students are working on several projects that will be completed independently or in teams after instruction. I have posted some of the big questions we will answer in this unit in a previous post.
Here are some of the assignments we will complete.

Our Braun Station Deanan popcorn fundraiser was a great success! The money raised will help fund our field trips, speakers, and the "Happiness Is" Anthology. *Speakers are being scheduled. I scheduled the Stevenson Middle School GT teachers to come visit with our 5th grade ALPHA students on January 6th at 8:30 am. They spoke with students on middle school registration and the expectations of the Stevenson GT program. Meet the New Director for Advanced Learning in NISD at the GT Advisory Council Meeting on January 15. See below for the flyer. February 26 is our Fuddruckers & LaserQuest Fundraiser Night for the GT Programs in NISD. Check back for more information soon to come. Braun Station ALPHA students are scheduled to take a field trip to the Botanical Gardens on Monday, March 23rd. We will participate in the Terrarium Ecosystem Program and visit the Rainforest Adventure Exhibit while at the Gardens. We will leave school about 9 am. We should have space for parents to ride with us on the bus if they choose. Please make sure you have your background checks completed before the field trip. I will check about a week or two before the trip for a list of parents eligible to chaperone. I am also planning a field trip to Government Canyon. More information on that later. Please make sure background checks are done asap. I have scheduled our Braun Station ECO-ADVENTURES ALPHA NIGHT for May 21 at 6pm in the cafeteria. Students will share their final research project displays with family and friends. We will begin this project either end of March on beginning of April. Some information is posted on the Research tab of our website. More information will be added later. The Braun Station 2nd Annual ALPHA Picnic is scheduled for Sunday, May 24th from 12-3 at Phil Hardberger Park West off NW Military. I hope you will be able to attend! We had so much fun last year even with the little rain we had that morning. We will be inviting Ellison GT families to join us as well. It's gonna be so great! More information as the date approaches. Parents, I will be reviewing the desert projects and other student work over the break and as soon as I get back from break. I will also review each student's progress as it applies to Scholarly Behaviors. The GT "report cards" called Student Performance Reports will go home with the regular classroom report cards in January. If you would like to have a conference before or after the reports go home, please let me know. I try to make myself available for conferences as much as possible. I am at Ellison on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and some Mondays. I am at Braun Station Thursdays and Fridays and every other Monday. In the meantime, you are welcomed to review your child's science notebook, his/her work on the student showcase on this website, and the blog for our projects and activities. I hope to add more projects to the showcase when we get back from break. I have attached a blank copy of the student performance report for you to review. Not all areas will be completed for the fall. Our main research project will take place in the spring.
Artistic Animals Art Show
Date: Saturday, December 13 from 12-4 p.m. Location: 137 Earl St. San Antonio, TX 78212 Contact: Sherman Animal Care Complex at 210-257-8823 Please drop by between 12-4 p.m. to purchase a painting (or two!) and mingle with WRR staff. There will be paintings of all sizes and canvas colors available for purchase and refreshments will be served. These paintings make a great holiday gift for the animal enthusiast on your list, and all proceeds from the event benefit the animals in WRR's care. These are great paintings to support our Biomes unit this year! Students have completed or are finishing their desert projects. Photos will be added soon on the Showcase tab! We have started our unit on Grasslands.
Some of the big questions students will explore through our activities are the following:
Keep checking the blog for new posts! If your child is interested in helping us create a ALPHA Naturalist Scrapbook to enhance our biome unit, please review the scavenger hunt items attached. Some students are in Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts or just love to be outside. We would like photos of the items to display for all the ALPHA groups. If, in addition, a photo can be taken of your child in the picture with the item, we will also include it in the scrapbook. We will complete this by Spring Break, so you can start at anytime and send in photos as you go. You can print them out or email them to me at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for helping with this project.
Parents, Please review these videos with your child. This is a great example of creativity and initiative. We viewed the first video with some of the classes and every child has enjoyed it! I have also shown them to the IC Club groups this week. I am hoping to include some of the concepts into our IC Club as an extension or start a new Makers Club in the spring with some other ideas I have. We will include some activities in the GT classes as part of culminating project options this year. If any of your kids make cardboard arcade games at home, bring them in or send video! We would LOVE to see them! We now have fish at both campuses in our GT room. Thank you to Jennifer Patlovany for being a great help on setting up the tank at Ellison and bringing the fish from PetSmart. The tanks were purchased from grants I was awarded from PETCO. The kids seem to love the fish already. Hoping to add more fish and water features soon! Come in to visit them!
The students completed The Cactus Hotel owls. Photos soon! You can see our display across our room at Ellison and in the main hall by kindergarten at Braun Station.
They are almost completely done with their Desert Plant Adaptation visual aids. They look super awesome...such creativity! The students learned about a specific desert plant and how it survives in the desert. They then created their plant and added the adaptations so we can all learn something. Some students have started their next project which is either a PowerPoint and Scrapbook or a Desert Game. More information is on the Links Tab. We are looking for any scrapbooking items that may be used for our project. Thanks for all the items in so far! They have really helped with these projects in fabulous ways. I have marked received items on SignUpGenius and added new ones that we need for upcoming activities. Make sure to read notes under the item on the left. Thank you parents! Please also sign up for Remind (previously Remind 101) if you have not already. It is the quickest way to send out information. If you need the code and info, first check your child's Parent section in their binder. If the information sheet is not there, please email me. The ALPHA T-shirts created by MZR Shirts will be delivered on Friday. I will check them over and send them home next week. Yay! If you still need to pay or were not able to order one, please contact me asap.
