I am the GT/Enrichment Specialist for two campuses this year--Braun Station Elementary and Carnahan Elementary. This is my 26th year as an educator. I graduated from Trinity University with a B.A. in Humanities and Biology in 1990 and a M.A. in Teaching in 1991. That same year, I was privileged to open Leon Springs Elementary as a kindergarten teacher. I spent ten years at Leon Springs where I eventually became the campus instructional technologist. As a CIT, I was able to teach all elementary grade levels at different campuses, offer high level after school activities, and implement school-wide programs. I continued to develop my teaching craft and earned a M.S. in Integrated Technology. After many years as a CIT, it was time yet again for a new challenge and experience. I opened my third Northside school, Bonnie Ellison Elementary last year; the second being Dr. Winn Murnin Elementary. My job as a GT Specialist has allowed me to work with students at a new level and I love it! All my students are unique and gifted in different ways and I feel like I have finally found "my people".
Outside of work, I balance my time between my family and service to the community. I have two sons. Both are college students. One is at Texas A&M University. He is a senior and in the Corp of Cadets and the Texas Army National Guard. The other is a sophomore mechanical engineering student. He will be a transfer to Trinity University. I most recently served on the Board of Directors for Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation, a nationally accredited and recognized wild animal sanctuary in Kendalia, Texas. I was with the organization for 27 years. I have volunteered as the Assistant Executive Director of the San Antonio Summer Art & Jazz Festival. I am presently serving with an organization focused on therapy dogs and serve on several committees both in and outside of school. I am a master naturalist and work in opportunities related to the field.
I am very excited about the year and am pleased that my experiences enrich learning in the classroom. My goal for my students is for them to appreciate the gifts they can contribute to their community and to develop a growth mindset where they never stop learning or being fascinated by everything which surrounds them.
